BEEHIVE – Prepare the hair with Prep by misting thoroughly at the mid length and ends. Apply Surf Spray liberally all over. Blowdry smooth with a flat brush then back comb at the crown. Rake through small amounts of Styling Wax through the sides and back, and then twist the hair into a pleat and pin into place. Finally lightly comb the crown into place with you fingers and pin in place above the roll.

CHIGNONS – Prepare the hair with Prep. Apply small amounts of Sumo Wax from roots to ends. Blowdry hair with round brush (and liberally mist with Surf Spray for a messy texture). Rake hair back into a ponytail and twist so the hair bends back on itself. Secure with pins.

LOOSE CURLS – Prepare the hair with Tonic and spray styling lotion liberally from roots to ends. Blowdry with a medium round brush, then mist each section with Spray de Mode and allow to cool down.

PONYTAILS (clean)– Prepare the hair with Prep. Apply Does It All from roots to ends and blowdry with a flat brush. Sumowax throughout then create a strong low side parting and carefully brush hair back into a pony and secure with elastic. Take one small piece of the pony and wrap it around the elastic.

Rocker/Rockerbilly

If style pundits were in any doubt as to the status of the rockabilly hair revival that has been gradually gaining momentum over the last two years, then the display of 30s, 40s and 50s-inspired retro hair at the menswear shows this year was the final proof they needed.

The rockabilly aesthetic and culture truly shook-up the traditional sensibilities of mainstream music and fashion of the post-war 50s. Gone was the wholesome identikit teenager and in was the spirit of rebellion, rock ‘n’ roll, B Movies and racy Bettie Page types. Good music wasn’t the only thing to come out of this epoch, thanks to musical icons such as Elvis and Johnny Cash and movie stars such as James Dean, the rockabilly hairstyle became huge – literally.

Straight fringe
Continuing on from last year’s men’s hair trends, the men’s fringe remains a major feature of men’s hair trends in 2010/11. The men’s fringe trend in 2010/11 comes in a variety of lengths, so you’re going to be able to play with the look to suit your face shape. While you’ll be looking to keep shorter back and sides (grade 4-5), the way of truly making it your own is to play with the length of the fringe itself.

Textured Fringe
This textured hair style, with its longer fringe, is the 2010/11 incarnation of the ‘Caesar cut’. The overall effect depends largely on using a matte wax or pomade to create the rugged texture and is quite akin to something sported by men in the Regency era.

The Classic Part
Given that the traditional part figures in so heavily into men’s hair trends the classic part in 2010/11 is very much about traditional styling – the sort worn by the likes of actor Cary Grant and The Prince Edward, Duke of Windsor; the 20th Century’s ultimate trend setter. And it is from the Duke (middle and right, below) that we can see two classic stylings: the side sweep (right) and the slick back(middle). 2010/11.

Sophistication – 1970

Sleek longer bob, masses of bouncy curls, or long, flowing hair.

Model Abbey Lee Kershaw

The bob wasn’t gone for long; and now it’s back, reinterpreted and re-imagined, with model Abbey Lee Kershaw its driving force. From 2010 and forwards the bob is longer, softer, and more retro-inspired. Think ’70s blow-waved with a soft rounded shape. The fringe also makes a reappearance as the perfect accompaniment to 2010′s new style of bob.

How is it different for 2010 / 2011?

The bob in 2008 was all about razor sharpness; edginess – often bluntly cut to chin length. By 2009 the bob had softened a little. Fringes were growing out. Messy layers were taking over from blunt lines. But the styles to be seen were still either thoroughly classic, or thoroughly modern.

In 2010 and onwards retro influences will triumph. The trend towards sophisticated ’70s dressing will be accompanied by the longer bob, neatly blow-waved under with a straight (but not too harsh) edge.

Glamour – 1960

Sultry and ’60s sex kitten, swept up into a beehive or messy topknot.

The late ’50s / early ’60s swing their way back onto the scene. Early ’60s ladylike dressing that flowed on from the late 1950s.

The same longer bob can, in 2010/2011, also be styled with a ’60s twist: back-combed for volume with the ends flicked out, or with a softer folk influence and unfussy styling. Think ’60s back-combed with flicked out ends.
